November 1, Mackenzie Cervenka and Eric Kossoff recently opened a clinic at Johns Hopkins that starts and monitors patients on a modified Atkins diet to control epilepsy. At the same time, another storm was more quietly brewing in the background: The investigation was sparked by similarities between the Atkins approach and the , which induces ketosis by strictly limiting carbohydrates and greatly increasing fats. Since its discovery in the s, the ketogenic diet has been used to treat pediatric epilepsy patients at Hopkins, where some of the largest studies to scientifically test its efficacy have been conducted. Many children still use it to keep their seizures in check. Though many adult patients start the ketogenic diet with high hopes, Kossoff says, the majority of them quit after weeks or months.
This may help reduce the risk of seizures for some people with epilepsy. Making your own meals gives more control over what you eat, and some things can help make cooking safer if you have seizures. There are no specific foods that generally trigger seizures, as epilepsy is very individual. Although there is little evidence that a balanced diet has a direct effect on seizures, it provides essential nutrients and keeps our energy levels steady.
